Fly Tying at the American Legion

ree

What a great Fly-Tying session we had.  25 vets and vols met at the American Legion Hall and tied the “Little Black Stonefly”.  The results were outstanding.  The pictures speak for themselves.  Vets who didn’t even know what a vice was a year or two ago tied some real masterpieces.  Check out the pictures and you’ll be amazed.

We picked up two new vols to work with our group, Paul and Dave.  Paul is a premier fly tyer and instructor which will help our vets perfect their skills even more.  Dave is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to vintage gear and is helping with some of our fundraising efforts.

Here is a Little Black Stonefly tied by Doug, one of our vet participants. A little less than two years ago, upon retirement, Doug started to get really active with our group. Now he attends every session and outing. With a size 16 hook, a few materials and a fly recipe he came up with this masterpiece.

Talking and tying, it's all part of the healing process. Pictured to the left, Tim, Sean, and the new vol Paul.

Some tied the fly of the month, others used

their experience to tie a favorite from the past.

You can see the craftsmanship in their work.

If you are a vet with disabilities or know one that may be interested in our program, maybe you are interested in supporting our program as a volunteer or through donation, you can contact us or support us by using the links on this site.

Typically, tying session run about 2 hours. The vets and vols tie together and spend the some of the time just enjoying being around like minded individuals talking and enjoying a few laughs.

Look for some big changes in 2026.  We will be meeting in person twice a month adding some evening fly-tying and, we are moving a few of our outing to Saturdays.  This will allow those that can’t normally attend because of work or other commitments to participate.  We might even get a few more vets.  If you know of a vet with disabilities that might benefit from our program, please send them our way.
