Veterans Healing On The Fly – Program FAQ

FOR VETERANS

Q1: What is this program about?
A: This program is not a fishing club, it is dedicated to veterans and active duty personnel who discover physical and emotional healing through fly fishing and the associated activities of fly tying and rod building. We offer instruction, gear, outings, and a supportive community at no cost to the vet.

Q2: Who is eligible to participate?
A: The program is open to all disabled U.S. military veterans and active duty military personnel, regardless of service era or disability type. Proof of veteran status may be required.

Q3: Do I need any prior fishing experience?
A: No experience is necessary. We welcome beginners and provide all the training, gear, and guidance you'll need to get started.

Q4: What does it cost to participate?

A: Nothing. The program is entirely free for veterans, this includes having gear available, instruction, and most travel associated with group outings.  The program is funded 100% by financial donations, including gear/equipment donations.  All donations flow directly back into the program to support our Veterans.

Q5: How do I sign up?
A: You can fill out our online contact form, contact, or attend an informational session. We’ll guide you through the next steps.

Q6: What activities are included?
A: Activities range from fly tying workshops, casting practice, rod building, group fishing trips, and local outings.

Q7: Is transportation provided to events?
A: Most veterans provide their own transportation but, in some cases, transportation is arranged or coordinated, especially for those with mobility challenges. Please let us know your needs in advance.

Q8: I have mobility limitations—can I still participate?
A: Absolutely. We make accommodations to ensure accessible fishing and workshop experiences. Adaptive gear and access options are available.

Q9: Can I bring a caregiver or family member?
A: In some cases, yes—particularly when assistance is needed. Please contact your local coordinator to discuss your situation.

Q10: Is this a therapy program?
A: While not formal clinical therapy, the program is widely recognized for its therapeutic benefits. Many participants find relief from stress, anxiety, PTSD, and physical limitations through community and nature.

FOR VOLUNTEERS

Q1: How can I get involved as a volunteer?
A: Start by reaching out through our website. We’ll help you find a volunteer role that fits your skills and interests.

Q2: Do I need to know how to fly fish?
A: No. While fishing knowledge is very helpful, we also need volunteers to help with organizing events, transportation, administration, hospitality, and more.

Q3: Are there training opportunities for volunteers?
A: Yes. We provide orientation and basic training for volunteers, including how to work respectfully and effectively with disabled veterans.

Q4: What kind of time commitment is required?
A: It’s flexible. Some volunteers help out occasionally, while others participate weekly. You can tailor your involvement to your schedule.

Q5: Can I help if I don’t have a military background?
A: Definitely. You do not need to be a veteran to volunteer. All we ask is that you come with respect and a willingness to serve.

Q6: What age do I need to be to volunteer?
A: Most volunteers are 18 or older. Younger individuals may participate with on-site parental supervision or as part of approved group projects.

Q7: Will I be paired with a specific veteran?
A: In some cases, especially with mentoring or teaching roles, yes. However, most volunteer positions involve helping the group as a whole.

Q8: How are safety and boundaries managed?
A: We take safety seriously and provide guidance on respectful communication, physical boundaries, and ethical conduct. Background checks may be required for certain roles.

Q9: Are expenses like gas or food reimbursed?

A: We do not reimburse volunteers for transportation expenses, but we provide food during our outings.  Group expenses are reimbursed e.g. pre-approved gear that is used by the vets on outings, please check first.  The program is funded 100% by financial donations, including gear/equipment donations.  All donations flow directly back into the program to support our Veterans.  The program is run completely by non-paid volunteers.

Q10: Why should I volunteer?
A: Volunteering is a chance to give back, learn new skills, meet incredible people, and witness the healing power of nature and community firsthand.
